Hugh Egener

Hugh Egener is a stone bear sculptor residing in Calgary, AB with a summer studio in Nakusp, BC. After retiring from a 33 year career in the Canadian Forces, Hugh started his second career as a sculptor in 2015. He had become fascinated with wildlife after a military exercise in the high Arctic (1977), where he encountered Muskox herds and viewed polar bears from the air. Primarily self-taught he calls his style, ‘block realism’, with an emphasis on motion and strength. Each piece tells a unique story and movement bringing the sculpture to life. His 19″ bronzed Grizzly, “Searching for Saddle Mountain” was selected by the village of Nakusp as public art on the Main Street. He has donated sculptures to Calgary Veteran fund raisers and the Nakusp’s hospital. Hugh has conducted workshops for Nakusp students, adults and military veterans (PTSD) in Calgary. His art has been sold provincially and found homes in Sweden, Poland, Turkey and Italy.
