Canadian, b. 1958

Steven Lamb was born in communist, Sofia, Bulgaria. After a two year compulsory military service he entered the Academy of Fine Arts, majoring in illustration and print making, which led him to the Academy of Graphic Art and Painting in Leipzig, Germany. In 1986 he had is first solo exhibition, leading to shows across East Germany. These successes garnered him an invitation to show in Cuba. En route, the plane refueled in Gander, Newfoundland. Instead of getting back on the plane, he applied for refugee status, and worked as an illustrator and printmaker in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

He illustrated The Atlantic Edge, published by Breakwater Books, and was a prizewinner at the 1993 International Art Competition at 54 Gallery in Soho, New York, after which he moved to Montreal.

In Montreal he was first employed as a printmaker and graphic artist, and later as a painter. Lamb’s cityscapes are in the rich traditions of the Grotesque style of painting.
